In 1964, Giovanni Fontana launched the Costa luggage set, named after the typical handicraft technique which involves the polishing of the sheared leather edges through multiple layers of lacquered ink that, still today, only a few master craftsmen share the formula. Appreciated by numerous members of the international jet set, the complete Costa set was owned, in its white leather, by the Greek magnate Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy and the Kuwait Emir, allegedly ordered 14 sets of luggage entirely made of elephant skin. The “Costa” suitcases still represent a symbol of a different way of traveling in which luxury is embodied by freedom of space and time and where the appearing simplicity of shapes is an added value to elegance, discretion but not triviality.
